I  had a childhood friend, sadly long departed, who was a great cook and lover of life, a hostess with all the expected, hospitable attributes of the Southern belle.  Janet left us with two memorable quotes: “Dead flowers are better than no flowers at all,” and my favorite, “The only thing that separates us from the lower animals is the quality and variety of our hors d’oeuvres.”

Through the years I have had my belief steadfastly reinforced that the cocktail hour offers much more than the focus of the evening, the dinner entree, and we remember more clearly and dearly, the conversations, the conviviality, and the gustatory experiences of the happiest hour.  As I have traveled over many years and continents, I have collected both experiences and recipes for little dishes, a great variety that my beloved fellow traveler, Joy, and I have shared with many friends…now it is your turn.
